The overall theme of testing at the beginning levels is for students to acquire and demonstrate familiarity, confidence, and rough technical ability with all the required material of their current and all previous exams. Technical perfection is not required, nor expected, but enthusiasm is!
Kihon – Basic Techniques
At the beginning levels, students should be able to perform any of the required basic techniques with confidence, should be able to achieve proper shapes at the end of each technique, not have an excess of improper movement while performing techniques, and should not have any hesitation in identifying which techniques are being required at the time of the examination.
Kata – Practice Forms
At the beginning levels, students should be able to perform all their forms with the same level of technical aptitude as their required basics. Additionally, students should be able to recall and perform the sequences for their required forms fluidly and without hesitation.
Kumite – Partner Exercises
At the beginning levels, students should be able to perform the movements within partner drills with the same level of technical aptitude as their required basics. Additionally, students are being examined while on either side of partner drills and should demonstrate awareness, concentration, intent, and respect at all times when working with a partner.
